How the savings are calculated

SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio) is BTUs of cooling delivered per watt-hour of electricity over a season. Rearranged, annual electricity use is:

kWh = capacity (BTU/h) × full-load cooling hours ÷ SEER ÷ 1,000

The calculator runs this for the old and new systems, multiplies each by your electricity rate, and reports the difference. Simple payback = installed cost ÷ annual savings; if savings are zero or negative the upgrade never pays back. The 15-year figure is annual savings × 15 at today's rate, roughly the service life of a central air conditioner, with no discounting or rate escalation.

Worked example: 3-ton SEER 10 unit replaced with 16 SEER2

  • Capacity 3 tons = 36,000 BTU/h; 1,000 full-load hours; 0.17/kWh;9,000 installed.
  • Old SEER 10 converted to SEER2: 10 × 0.95 = 9.5 SEER2.
  • Old use: 36,000 × 1,000 ÷ 9.5 ÷ 1,000 = 3,789 kWh → $644 per year.
  • New use: 36,000 × 1,000 ÷ 16 ÷ 1,000 = 2,250 kWh → $383 per year.
  • Savings: 1,539 kWh and $262 per year (41%); payback 9,000 ÷ 261.71 = 34.4 years; 15-year savings $3,926.

The full-replacement payback is long. If the old system has failed and must be replaced anyway, compare only the price difference between a 14.3 SEER2 and a 16 SEER2 model (often $1,000–$2,000), which pays back far sooner.

SEER vs SEER2 and the 2023 federal minimums

On January 1, 2023 DOE switched to the Appendix M1 test procedure, which uses higher external static pressure (0.5 in. w.c. for ducted systems) to reflect real duct systems. The same equipment therefore rates lower: SEER2 ≈ SEER × 0.95 for ducted split systems (the exact factor varies by product type). Comparing a SEER 10 label with a 16 SEER2 label directly would understate the savings, so this tool converts the old rating first.

Split heat pumps must meet 14.3 SEER2 nationally. Units installed in the South and Southwest must meet the regional standard based on install date, not manufacture date.

Common mistakes and what the estimate leaves out

  • Using thermostat run time for hours. The formula needs equivalent full-load hours. A system that runs at part load for 3,000 hours may only log 1,200 full-load hours. Your summer electric bills minus a spring baseline are the best local check.
  • Expecting a tax credit. No federal credit applies: the IRC 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit ended for property placed in service after December 31, 2025. Check your utility and state for rebates instead.
  • Ignoring installation quality. DOE and ENERGY STAR note that incorrect refrigerant charge and low airflow can cut real efficiency by 30% or more, erasing the rating difference.
  • Changing size at the same time. If the new unit is smaller after a Manual J load calculation, run the calculator with the new capacity for the new system; this tool assumes equal capacity.
